One thing worth knowing: if a player gets injured before their nation’s first game, a replacement from the preliminary 55 can be called up with FIFA medical approval up to 24 hours before kick-off.
ENGLAND, confirmed May 22
Tuchel named his final 26 on Friday May 22. Announced live from Wembley, soundtracked by The Beatles. The two names that dominated the conversation immediately were the ones left out: Foden and Palmer are not going to the World Cup. Described by Sky Sports as “probably the most shocking squad since 1998.” Maguire posted on social media that he was “shocked and gutted” to miss out.
The squad Tuchel is taking: Reece James came back in. John Stones is going despite his injury concerns. Djed Spence is in ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, which raised eyebrows. Ivan Toney included at striker. Rashford is in after his revival at Barcelona, eight league goals and seven assists for the LaLiga winners. Gordon was listed as Newcastle when the squad was announced but agreed a £69.3m move to Barcelona on May 27. He goes to Dallas as a Barcelona player.

Nagelsmann named his squad on June 1. Florian Wirtz is the player the tournament has been waiting to see at a major international tournament for two years. Kimmich, Rudiger, Havertz, Gnabry all named. Germany are in Group E with Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador, which is the most comfortable group any top nation has been drawn into. Wirtz is 21 and has been arguably the best creative midfielder in the Bundesliga for two seasons. North America is the stage that matches his talent.

Messi is going. Sixth World Cup. He turns 39 in June and will be almost 39 when Argentina begin their title defence against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium on June 16. Three goals short of the all-time World Cup scoring record of 16. If Argentina go deep, that record falls in North America.
Scaloni has the defending champions in good shape. Cristian Romero recovered from a late-season knee injury to make the squad. Juan Musso takes the number one jersey ahead of Emiliano Martinez and Geronimo Rulli, which raised eyebrows. Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez lead the attack alongside Messi. Nico Paz, who had a breakout season at Como under Cesc Fabregas helping them qualify for the Champions League for the first time, is in. Valentin Barco, who joins Chelsea from Strasbourg this summer, is also named.
Notable absentees: Franco Mastantuono, Emiliano Buendia. Di Maria retired after the 2024 Copa America. Dybala and Angel Correa did not make the preliminary squad.

The biggest story in the announcement was the one that was not there. No Real Madrid players. First time in World Cup history Spain have named a squad without a single player from the Bernabeu. Huijsen did not make it. Carvajal did not make it. De la Fuente made his position clear without saying much about it publicly.
Yamal is in despite a hamstring issue picked up at the end of the season. De la Fuente said the medical reports suggest he will be available for the opener against Cape Verde on June 15. Gavi is back after his long injury absence, the emotional story of the squad. Fermin Lopez is not going anywhere after a broken foot ended his season.
Rodri starts despite fitness questions. Zubimendi, who had an outstanding season at Arsenal winning the Premier League title, is also in.
