The squad announcement had not been made yet. Tuchel had called Maguire personally earlier that day to tell him he was not going. The conversation had happened. And then before the names appeared on the official England app, before The Beatles had finished playing over the Wembley film, Maguire was on his phone posting that he was “shocked and gutted.” Then his mum posted. Then his brother.

That is how a nine-year England career ended. Not quietly. Not with a statement released after the dust had settled. On social media, before the squad was public, with the family involved.

The honest question this piece asks is whether he was right to be shocked. The honest answer is no.

Lithuania in October 2017 was the debut. Japan in March 2026 was the last one. Sixty-six caps in between, seven goals, twelve World Cup appearances across two tournaments. He was named in the team of Euro 2020 when England reached the final and nobody seriously argued with that at the time. Four consecutive major tournament squads. Before the harder question of why he is not going to Dallas, the record sits there and it is a good one.

Russia 2018 was where it all clicked. The header against Sweden in the quarter-final. The ability to step out from the back line with the ball at his feet and drive into space in a way England centre-backs almost never did under Southgate. That whole tournament, Maguire looked like a player who belonged at that level without question. He was good. Not solid or adequate. Actually good.

Euro 2020 then. England kept clean sheets. They made the final for the first time since 1966. Maguire was in the middle of all of it and the team of the tournament selection reflected what the people watching had seen.

That is the high point. The rest is more complicated.

WHY TUCHEL LEFT HIM OUT

Tuchel has not selected Maguire in a single squad since taking the job in January 2025. Not for qualifying. Not for the March friendlies. Not now. This is not a decision made in the week before the announcement. It has been the position for seventeen months.

Maguire is 33 and at Manchester United, whose season has been difficult across most departments. He has played in a defence that has been inconsistent all year. At his age, without the acceleration he had at 25, the argument for taking him ahead of Guehi, who is 24, or Konsa, who is 27, or Quansah, who is 22, simply does not hold.

Stones went to this World Cup despite fitness questions because Tuchel looks at Stones and sees something irreplaceable. He looks at Maguire and sees a 33-year-old at a struggling Manchester United. That gap is the whole explanation. Southgate knew Maguire over years of working together and had watched him be brilliant in an England shirt enough times to keep picking him through bad club form. Tuchel has no version of that history to draw on.

For the full breakdown of every selection Tuchel made and who else missed out, our England World Cup 2026 squad analysis covers every call and the reasoning behind it.

WAS HE RIGHT TO BE SHOCKED

No.

The form has not been good enough. The age is against him. Tuchel had not selected him in any squad across the entire qualification campaign. None of those things happened without warning. A player paying close attention to what Tuchel values and who Tuchel picks would have been preparing for this possibility for months rather than treating it as a shock when it arrived.

The emotional reaction makes sense on a human level. Nine years. Four major tournaments. A World Cup semi-final. A European Championship final. Tuchel calling you personally to say you are not going to the biggest tournament in the world. That is painful and nobody is pretending otherwise. The hurt is real.

But “shocked” is a different claim from “hurt.” Shocked implies this came from nowhere. It did not. Tuchel had been telling him through every squad selection since January 2025 exactly where he stood. The phone call on the morning of the announcement confirmed it.

Most players in that situation put out a measured statement a few days later, or say nothing at all. Maguire went on his phone before Tuchel had made it public. His mum was in the comments. His brother posted too. Whatever you think about whether he should have been in the squad, the way it played out publicly was not a great look for anyone.

THE CAREER IN FULL

Watch the 2018 World Cup back and Maguire is genuinely good. Not the sort of good you say to be fair-minded about someone who has had a rough time. Actually, properly good. The World Cup semi-final at 25, the team of the tournament at Euro 2020. Those things happened and were real.

The captaincy at United went in July 2023. That was the visible signal but the form had been drifting before that. Three seasons at a club that has been poorly run, badly coached at various points and deeply inconsistent. Some of the criticism of Maguire over that period was excessive. A lot of it was not. At 33, with less pace than he had when Southgate first built around him, the margin for error gets smaller and the mistakes get more visible. Tuchel watched all of it and drew his own conclusions.

WHERE IT LEAVES HIM

At Manchester United on a contract that runs to the summer. Whether he sees that out or moves on is a separate question from the England one. The England question is settled. Tuchel has shown in every squad he has named who he trusts and who he does not. Maguire has not been in a single one.

The social media post is the image that follows this story now. “Shocked and gutted.” Before the squad was public. Family in the comments. That is the ending of a nine-year England career that included a World Cup semi-final and a European Championship final. It deserved a quieter exit than that. So did he.
