Liverpool 3-2 Man City: Player Ratings

In a crucial match at the top of the Barclays Premier League, Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side defeated Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City side in an exhilarating encounter at Anfield. Here are my player ratings…

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet 6/10

A couple of shaky moments, particularly from corners but made a decent save from Fernandinho.

Glen Johnson 5/10

Not  his best game ever, gave the ball away too many times and didn’t attack as much as he would have wanted.

Mamadou Sakho 6/10

Looked nervous on the ball and lucky not to concede a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Edin Džeko.

Martin Škrtel 7/10

Excellent headed goal from a corner and solid defensively.

Jon Flanagan 7/10

Young full back looks to be a real prospect. Defended and attacked well.

Steven Gerrard 8/10

Captain fantastic. Excellent delivery for the second goal and worked tirelessly throughout the match.

Jordan Henderson 7/10

Played some fantastic passes but blatant red card challenge on Samir Nasri means he’ll be missing for three games.

Raheem Sterling 8/10

Fantastic goal, took it brilliantly. Caused the City defence problems all day.

Daniel Sturridge 5/10

Disappointing. Never really got involved and had a few good chances, but poor touches let him down.

Luis Suárez 7/10

Dangerous as always but could count himself lucky to be on the pitch after a dive that should have been a second yellow card.

Manchester City

Joe Hart 6/10

Conceded three goals but made a really good save from a Gerrard header in the first half. Should have got back towards his line for the first goal.

Pablo Zabaleta 6/10

Solid without being spectacular. Wasn’t able to get forward as much as he normally does.

Martín Demichelis 7/10

Quite impressive. Solid and strong which makes a change.

Vincent Kompany 5/10

Disappointing but didn’t really look fit to play. Awful attempt at a clearance lead to Liverpool’s winner.

Gael Clichy 6/10

Got in some good positions but final ball was often poor.

Fernandinho 7/10

Strong and powerful. Strode forward with confidence.

Yaya Toure 4/10

Substituted early on with a suspected groin injury. Replaced by Javi García.

Samir Nasri 6/1o

Couple of nice touches but didn’t really cause any problems. Wiped out by Jordan Henderson at the end.

David Silva 7/10

Poor in the first half but came to life in the second.

Jesús Navas 5/10

Totally anonymous. Rightly substituted for James Milner.

Edin Džeko 6/10

Never looked likely to score. Needs to do more.

Referee: Mark Clattenburg 7/10

Had a good game, allowed it to flow with plenty of advantages, got the red card correct but could  have given a penalty against Sakho.
