Liverpool ready to pay £42m for Bundesliga star Nico Schlotterbeck

Liverpool are reportedly ‘very interested’ in signing Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck.

The Reds crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night after they lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield following a 1-1 aggregate draw in their last-16 tie. It was a shocking result that Football Blog hadn’t anticipated.

However, Arne Slot’s men are on course to lift the Premier League trophy this campaign as they are 16 points clear at the top with nine games remaining.

Big changes in their first-team squad is expected for next season, with three of their most important players out of contracts in the summer.

Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk have all entered the final few months of their contracts and look set to leave the club.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing for life without Van Dijk as they are considering a move for Dortmund defender Schlotterbeck.

According to a report from Bild, the Merseyside giants are ready to pay a fee around £42 million for the 25-year-old.

Schlotterbeck joined the Prussians in the summer of 2022 for £21m. He went on to establish himself as one of the most important players for the Bundesliga club, making 121 total appearances and scoring six goals.

He played a crucial role in their journey to the Champions League final last term, where they ultimately lost to Real Madrid.

The Germany international has also been a key first-team member for Niko Kovac’s side this season, featuring in 34 matches in all competitions so far.

Dortmund have had a disastrous season so far, with the Black and Yellow languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga table.

They could lose some of their best players if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Dortmund will return to European action on Wednesday as they take on Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy after playing out a 1-1 draw in the first-leg of their last-16 tie.
