Fernando Torres, full name Fernando José Torres Sanz is a Spanish footballer who plays as a striker for Chelsea and the Spanish national team. Born in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, Torres joined the Atlético Madrid youth team in 1995, making his full debut for ‘Los Colchoneros’ in 2001. Torres was an excellent young striker, scoring 82 goals in 214 appearances at Atlético and playing for Spain at all youth levels from Under 15 to Under 21.

Torres’ performances at Atlético Madrid earned interest from top clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle before signing for Rafael Benítez’s Liverpool in July 2007 for around £20 million. Torres quickly became one of Liverpool’s most important players and a fan favourite, thanks to scoring many important goals for the club in the Premier League and Champions League, despite not winning any major trophies with the club.

On the 28th January 2011, Torres handed in an official transfer request following a £40 million bid from Chelsea. Both the bid and transfer request were rejected by Liverpool, however on the 31st January 2011, Torres joined Chelsea for a British record transfer fee of £50 million. Chelsea evidently valued him as one of the best strikers in the world, but following his move from Liverpool, it took Torres until 23rd April 2011 to score his first goal for the London club.

Torres has never recaptured the form that saw him recognised as a world class striker at Atlético and Liverpool whilst playing for Chelsea, but has at least added some major honours. Whilst at Chelsea, Torres has one the 2012 FA Cup, the 2012 Champions League and the 2013 Europa League.
Fernando Torres is also well decorated for his performances for the Spanish national team, for whom he has made more than 100 appearances, winning the UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012 as well as at Under 16 and Under 19 level. In 2010, Torres was a member of the Spanish squad which won the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Alongside former Chelsea teammate Juan Mata, Torres is the first player to have held the Champions League, Europa League, World Cup and the European Championship titles simultaneously.
