Mesut Özil is a German football player who plays for Arsenal. Özil grew up in Gelsenkirchen Germany and is a third generation Turkish-German. Özil’s youth career was spent playing for several clubs in Gelsenkirchen, and from 2000-2005 Özil played for Rot-Weiss Essen.

Özil joined Schalke 04’s youth academy in 2005 and won the 2006 German youth Championship. Özil got his chance for Schalke after injuries and suspensions and quickly broke into the senior team, and in the 2006-2007 season, Özil featured regularly for a Schalke team that finished second in the Bundesliga, and made his first appearances in the Champions League.

Mesut Özil fell out with the Schalke management, and refused a contract offer from the club. Özil was dropped, but still chose not to sign the contract and was subsequently sold to Werder Bremen in January 2008 for around €4 million, the most expensively priced teenager in Germany at the time.

Özil’s transfer to Bremen catapulted him into the German media spotlight, and was now a fledging star, with all the pressure that came with it, and was often referred to locally as ‘der Neue Diego’, The New Diego, the brilliant Brazilian whose boots he was bought to fill. Despite the pressure, Özil flourished at Werder Bremen and his performances led to him being called up to the German 2010 World Cup squad, where he started all matches, providing vital assists that helped Germany to a third place finish, and was nominated for the Golden Ball.

Özil was now one of Europe’s most promising talents, and his World Cup performances had top clubs vying for his signature. After a summer of rumours Özil eventually signed for Real Madrid on the 17th August 2010, for around €15 million. Özil joined Real Madrid as one of new manager José Mourinho’s major summer signings, along with fellow German Sami Khedira, Ricardo Carvalho and Ángel di María. Despite not being an immediate first choice, Özil finished his first season at Real Madrid with 25 assists, the highest in major European competitions.

From 2011, Özil was given the number 10 shirt and established himself as Real Madrid’s chief playmaker. The 2011-2012 saw Özil continue his fine form and establish himself as one of the best players in the world, notching up 17 assists in a La Liga campaign that finished with a winners medal. Individually, Özil’s performances gained him nominations for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award and the Ballon d’Or.

Özil’s excellent form continued in the 2012-2013 season, and despite rumours that the player had become unsettled in Madrid, Özil played another excellent campaign, again making more assists than any other player in La Liga, finishing the season with 26 league assists.

On the 2nd of September 2013, Özil made a shock move to Arsenal, for a club record fee in the region of £42 million, signing a 5 year deal at the North London club.
