Thoughts on England 1-2 Italy

England were beaten 2-1 by the Italians on Saturday night in Manaus, here are my thoughts on the game…

Wayne Rooney

Yes he set up the goal and it was a great cross to be fair but apart from that, Rooney was very poor. The chance at the end when Leighton Baines put him through with a brilliant pass was absolutely huge and you just can’t afford to not hit the target with those sorts of opportunities. At least test the goalkeeper! Then he takes a corner which is still rising as we speak. Pathetic. It’s not hard to take a corner. We all know Wayne Rooney has immense talent, so why does he never show it for England? He’s had too many chances and failed to deliver, that’s why I’d drop him for the Uruguay game and start Rickie Lambert. At the moment I feel more confident with Lambert up front than I do Rooney. I’d expect someone as good as Rooney to deliver more than one good cross.

Substitutions

If Daniel Sturridge was carrying a slight knock then why on earth wasn’t Lambert brought on? We needed to score a goal, Lambert scores goals. It’s not rocket science. Adam Lallana is a great player and as you know I’m a massive fan of his but I’m sorry, Rickie Lambert is more of a goal threat than Lallana and for me that would have been a far more logical substitution. Jordan Henderson off, Jack Wilshere on. And the point of that was?

Defensive Problems

How bad was Glen Johnson? Leighton Baines, one good pass to Rooney, apart from that, very poor. Although to be fair, Rooney did leave him rather exposed. Cahill and Jagielka are OK, but nothing special. Personally I felt Cahill could have got a bit tighter to Mario Balotelli for the goal.

Overall

I don’t think England were awful yesterday but they certainly weren’t brilliant. The result was more important than the performance, yet there are some people who seem to be happy even though we lost. I’m an England fan and I want us to do really well at this tournament but we have got to do better than we did on Saturday night. I’m sorry to say this, but I can’t see us getting through the group. We will draw with Uruguay at best, and Costa Rica (who everyone thought would be the weakest team) beat Uruguay convincingly. I am desperate for England to do well at a major tournament for once. For me, success would be getting out of the group but now we are already playing catch up. Oh well, at least it’s better than 2010.

I know there will be people out there that think I’m way too negative, and yes, we did play a really good team in Italy, but there were a lot of things we got wrong.

I still have faith in Roy Hodgson but we have got to play better. We have a talented bunch of players and it would be such a shame if we couldn’t even get out of the group.

Come on England, you’re better than Saturday’s performance. Let’s all come together as a group and win our next two games.
